Man accused of stealing odd assortment from vet clinic

About $500, a dart gun, a jacket, a bottle of heartworm medication, a bottle of wine, a keyboard, 12 expired bottles of epinephrine and ink cartridges were reported stolen from the Scott City Animal Clinic last week.

Barrett Chase Hoover, 32, of Cape Girardeau has been charged with second-degree burglary, felony theft, misdemeanor theft of a firearm and misdemeanor theft.

Hoover was taken into custody by Jackson police Friday, according to a probable-cause statement by Scott City police officer Blake Leadbetter, although an arrest warrant was not filed until Tuesday.

Animal clinic employees noticed things were out of place and medicine boxes on the floor at 7:37 a.m. Thursday, then saw the back window by the dog kennel had been broken. One of the employees cataloged all the missing items, Leadbetter wrote.

Leadbetter identified Hoover based on footage from surveillance cameras, then released photos from the footage, he wrote.

Jackson police took Hoover into custody and saw a bottle of medication used at the veterinary clinic on the center console of his vehicle. He also was wearing a stolen St. Louis Rams jacket and the same shirt identified from footage of the burglary, Leadbetter wrote.

Leadbetter found the remaining stolen items, plus needles, syringes, two cattle sheers and a paycheck stub from the clinic in Hoover's vehicle after it was towed, Leadbetter wrote.
