A man died of his injuries early Sunday morning after being shot in Cape Girardeau. A man died of his injuries early Sunday morning after being shot in Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau police officers responded to a report of a shooting at 2:03 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of South Frederick Street.

Officers found a man on the street. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release Sunday from the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad, which is investigating.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton said he had been instructed by police not to release the identity of the victim at this time, and police were unavailable for additional comment Sunday.

They did not say whether anyone was in custody.

Before Sunday's shooting, Cape Girardeau County had seen two homicides in 2015.

Melissa Luttrell was shot to death in Gordonville in March, and Howard Harris Smith Jr. was found shot to death in Cape Girardeau in early October.

There were four homicides in Cape Girardeau County during 2014, according to Uniform Crime Reporting data.

All four of the shootings in 2014 took place in Cape Girardeau city limits.
