The congregation of New McKendree United Methodist Church celebrates 150 years of Methodism in Jackson. Highlight of the morning services is the recreated visit of the 1840 presiding elder, the Rev. Jacob Lanius, an early Methodist circuit rider. He is portrayed by the Rev. Cleo Kottwitz, director of Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry at Rolla, Missouri.

Nearly 200 Southeast Missouri emergency response officials -- police, fire and emergency rescue personnel -- participated in an earthquake response conference yesterday in Cape Girardeau. Five California fire chiefs and a fire captain, all of whom were involved in last year's California Loma Prieta earthquake, spoke at the conference.

1965

The Cape Girardeau City Council, at a special meeting, authorizes the leasing of a city-owned tract north of Arena Park to the Navy Department. Mayor Charles A. Hood signs the lease, which covers more than 52 years.

The Cape Girardeau Public Schools system mails questionnaires to more than 400 employers here in an effort to gather information that will help school officials better plan the vocational-education curriculum. The school district hopes to mold its vocational program to the specific occupational needs of the community.

1940

Chief Clerk Allen A. Reed of the Cape Girardeau County Draft Board issues a plea to all registrants who need help filling out their questionnaires to go to the Legal Advisory Board for help. Reed has been swamped with requests for aid from draft registrants.

Present officers are re-elected and the 1941 fair dates are set by the board of directors of the SEMO District Fair Association at its annual re-organization meeting; the 1941 exposition will be held Sept. 16 to 21. Officers are A.E. Kies of Jackson, president; Dr. O.L. Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau, vice president; and Herman Bremermann of Cape Girardeau, secretary-treasurer.

1915

The Rev. Abe Jones, field agent in Southeast Missouri for the Missouri Home Finding Society of St. Louis, is in the city working on behalf of the orphanage. He is planning to take a dozen or so children to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, for an exhibition such as he gave in Cape Girardeau a year ago. It is hoped the people of Poplar Bluff will open their arms to the children.

Cape Girardeau County, through prosecuting attorney Henry Caruthers and special attorney Edward D. Hays, has secured a temporary injunction from Judge R.G. Ranney restraining the Little River Drainage District officers from cutting the public highways of the county in eight places.
