Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Nov. 17 at the home of Kathy Kiefner. Susan Benton, president, conducted the meeting with eight members present.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read.

Two members went to the fall dinner hosted by Torchbearer Iota. They reported having a wonderful time.

Secret sister gifts were passed out. The service committee reported that $100 in gift cards will be given to the Hope House in Jackson to be used for Christmas outings for the children who live at the home.

The program was given by Kathy Kiefner on the observance of Veterans Day and she also passed around the book "Heartland Heroes to Remember: A Tribute to the Veterans of WWI & II," in which her father had been one of the highlighted veterans.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at El Sol Restaurant iun Cape Girardeau.

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met on Nov. 18 at the Cape River Heritage Museum. Charlotte Slinkard, regent, led the DAR Ritual. Two guests were present: Margaret Ford, director of the Cape River Heritage Museum; and Roxanne Dunn, special collections and archives librarian at Kent Library and a member of the board of directors of the museum. Dunn spoke about the Charles Harrison rare book collection at Southeast Missouri State University.

Carolyn Webb, vice regent, read the president general's message to the chapter and Karen Ruth Lang, treasurer, gave the financial report. Reports from officers and chairmen followed. The regent announced that the chapter's Amy Kimmel Marker was dedicated on Oct. 3 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. She urged members to participate in the President General's Celebrate America Project by adding their community volunteer service hours to the DAR online site. Reagan Elizabeth Brown, a member of the National Society Children of the American Revolution, has indicated an interest in joining the chapter.

Carol Robinson reported that the chapter is a participating partner of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War. She and Penelope Bender are co-chairwomen.

Webb, chairman of the DAR Good Citizen Committee, announced that four area high schools are participating in the program this year. A reception will be held to introduce the winners in February.

The chapter's November book donation to the Genealogy Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library was given by Webb. It is titled, "Tyrone County Documents 1776-1779: A North Carolina County," by Kathy Gunter Sullivan. The chapter will send Christmas gifts to the young boys who live in the Missouri Groves Cottage at Tamassee School, Tamassee, South Carolina, in honor of former chapter member Allene Groves, past president general of DAR.

Members were encouraged to attend the 117th Missouri State Conference April 14 through 17, 2016, at the Embassy Inn and Suites, St. Charles, Missouri. President General Lynn Forney Young will attend. The next meeting on Dec. 9 will be a luncheon with the women veterans at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Lamplighters FCE Club

Roberta Allen was the hostess for the Lamplighter FCE Club meeting on Nov. 19. Club Collect was said, a devotion was given by Allen and roll call was a cookie exchange. The minutes were read and Linda Sebaugh gave the treasurer's report.

Unfinished business: Verla Mangels read a thank-you note from the Tiger Sanctuary for the club's participation in collecting meat donations. JoAnn Hahs reported that 60 cards were collected from club members for the military. Progress about the yarn angels and number to be made for the Jackson Manor residents was discussed.

New business: The December council meeting will be held Thursday at the Extension Center and Lamplighter Club will provide salads for the noon meal. Also, members should bring items to donate for a silent auction.

Linda Sebaugh gave the program on paper cutting. She also had patterns available for members.

Dec. 10 will be the next club meeting. Members will go the Yule Log Cabin, lunch at Sandy's Place at the airport, deliver handmade yarn angels to the Jackson Manor residents, exchange gifts, draw names and install officers for 2016. Members should meet at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge parking lot.
