Employees of the Scott City Police Department were given polygraph tests last week at a cost of more than $900 to the city after a string of thefts within the department; $90 -- including $30 in city funds, equipment and one employee's badge -- have been taken over a period of two to three years.

The Cape Girardeau City Council has remanded to the Municipal Golf Course Advisory Board a proposal to increase fees at the course, with instructions the board hold a public hearing on the plan; the council action came after three local golfers protested the increase at Wednesday's council meeting.

The Cape Girardeau County Court moves to proceed with negotiations to buy a building at 37 S. Frederick St. in Cape Girardeau to be used as a temporary juvenile detention home; the building is expected to cost the county $9,000, and $7,500 will be spent to remodel it.

Roofers working for Capaha Sheet Metal & Roofing Co., a sub-contractor tarring the roof at the new Hawthorn School on Hopper Road, call the Cape Girardeau Fire Department to extinguish a fire in an asphalt cooker; the fire is confined to a small section behind the new school; two metal doors are charred and will have to be replaced.

Referendum petitions, with 2,036 signatures, have been filed in the city clerk's office asking the Cape Girardeau City Council to set aside its offer of a site in Courthouse Park for the $430,000 post office building or forcing a vote on the issue by the people.

Four Teachers College students -- Warren Brown, Chester Hoevel, Gordon Huneke and Kirk Leeper -- discovered a fire in the Agriculture Building on the campus last evening; smashing a window, they used a chemical extinguisher to halt the blaze before any great damage was done; the fire was confined to the motor of a refrigeration unit, thanks to the students' quick actions.

The Broadway moving-picture show has been consolidated with the Park Theater, according to the managers of both houses; the move is a cost-cutting measure; the Broadway house will be kept open for a while, or until the present contract for pictures can be transferred.

W.A. French leaves for his home in Mountain View, Missouri, after visiting his son, W.M. French, for several days; this was the elder French's first visit here for 14 years, and he was so enthused with the city he has decided to move to Cape Girardeau with his son, Homer, next spring.
