1965

Jackson city officials and others who have been promoting the $375,000 general obligation bond issue for water and sewer expansion are trying to figure out what happened in yesterday's election. Although there was little known organized opposition to the matter, the issue fell short by 39 votes of getting the needed two-thirds majority of passage. The bonds would have helped finance expansion of the water and sewer plants.

Major improvements at the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course will get underway shortly after Jan. 1 and probably will be completed by next August. The work will include enlarging the greens, building new tees and improving the fairways.

1940

The 45-voice St. Francois Choral Society of Farmington, Missouri, directed by Curtis L. Nations, performs Handel's "Messiah" in the evening in the auditorium at Teachers College.

Hundreds of customers and clerks in some downtown stores found themselves in the midst of an unannounced blackout at the height of the Saturday night pre-Christmas shopping rush. The difficulty arose when a transformer in front of the Bahn Bros. Store on Main Street burned out. Firemen were called when the unit started to spit fire and went out of commission. Repairs were made quickly by Missouri Utilities Co. workers.

1915

Capt. Richmond Pearson Hobson, the man who sank the Merrimac in Santiago Harbor during the Spanish-American War and immediately was acclaimed the hero of that conflict, arrives in Cape Girardeau on the noon train from St. Louis. He will speak at Jackson this afternoon and at Centenary Methodist Church this evening in support of national prohibition.

Dr. J.S. Lehr, the distinguished veterinary surgeon and race-horse fancier, has patented a self-inflating automobile tire. He expects to contract with tire makers on a royalty basis.
