The final two phases of cleanup at the Kem-Pest Superfund site near Cape Girardeau may begin next summer and, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, will cost nearly $770,000; the EPA has recommended decontamination and off-site incineration of a building that was used to produce pesticides.

Three hundred and fifty members of four Army Reserve medical units in Missouri have been called to active duty, possibly as replacements for personnel involved in Operation Desert Shield; included in the call-up are 24 members from Detachment 1 of the 21st General Hospital based at the Army Reserve Training Center in Cape Girardeau.

Otto F. Dingeldein, a Cape Girardeau silversmith, designed a chalice which was made in an attempt to express his philosophy that the cup is the important part of the chalice; it was purchased by the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, to be used in communion services at the Protestant Chapel; the structure of the chapel is similar to that of the chalice.

A Christmas puppet show staged at the Little Theater of Kent Library at State College by the student branch of the Association for Childhood Education proves so popular, it will be repeated Tuesday night; the first performance is given to a near-capacity audience; in charge of the project are Charlene Heisserer and Martha Stanley.

1940

Construction of sanitary toilets in Cape Girardeau County will be started through a WPA project under supervision of the state Board of Health; property owners must furnish the materials, such as cement, lumber, etc., and a WPA project will be set up to do the actual construction and installation work; many of the out buildings should be located in the Smelterville suburb, replacing ones that are a direct health menace.

Work on a $6,000 building, 40 by 125 feet, to house the Charles Leimer farm implement business, will start soon at Jackson; Leimer recently purchased from the Service Construction Co., of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the frontage on Highway 25 formerly owned by the late Dr. B.W. Hays; the new building will front on Highway 25, with extensive display rooms; the first floor will be constructed of concrete, and the second will be of red brick.

A memorial service is held in the afternoon at St. James A.M.E. Church honoring the late Booker T. Washington, one of the great black educators of America.

About 150 businessmen and farmers of Illmo and the neighborhood met at Illmo yesterday afternoon; after a discussion of needed improvements to area roads, a commercial club was organized; officers elected were G.I. Moore, president; R.A. Pellett, secretary; B. Hugh Smith, first vice president; U.L. Laflan, second vice president, and R.L. Buck, treasurer.
