The Woodland girls basketball team's defense kicked in after the first quarter, and the Cardinals claimed third place in the Lady Devil Invitational with a 49-35 win over Kelly on Saturday in Chaffee, Missouri.

The Hawks led 16-10 after one quarter but were limited to single digits in each of the following quarters.

The Cardinals outscored the Hawks 15-3 in the second quarter and took a 25-19 lead into halftime. Woodland held a 24-16 scoring advantage in the second half.

Krista Rhodes paced Woodland with 16 points, while Mara Grandstaff added 12 points.

Tori Dunne netted 11 points to lead Kelly, while Hailey Noon finished with 10 points.

In the consolation final, Puxico held Delta to single-digit scoring in each quarter to post a 40-26 win.

Sophia Hancock scored a game-high 15 points for Puxico. Katelyn Pierre had 13 points, while Faith Oliver totaled 11.

Carrie Waddle led Delta with nine points.

Notre Dame finished with 169 points to secure sixth place among 13 teams at the early-season meet in St. Louis.

Cape Central placed seventh with 129 points, followed by Jackson in eighth with 124 points.

Westminster Christian Academy finished at the top of the team standings with 433 points, followed by Ladue Horton Watkins (353) in second and Poplar Bluff (292) in third.

Jackson's Sydney Deneke (200.60) won the 1-meter diving, while teammate Caitlyn Palmer placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.82 seconds) and 25 freestyle (12.48). Jackson's Faith Littleton took third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:46.84.

Megan Peters finished second for the Bulldogs in the 200 freestyle (2:03.86) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:03.82), while teammate Madison Heisserer placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.44) and third in the 100 freestyle (59.03).

Josey Powell led Central with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.77) while also securing a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.72) along with teammates Allison McDonald, Molly Phegley and Amanda Mabry.
