1965

The Cape Girardeau County Court issues a check for $9,000 to purchase a residence at 37 S. Frederick St. in Cape Girardeau to serve as a temporary juvenile detention home; the preliminary figures for equipping and operating the home the first year comes to $10,410, but doesn't include installation of radio equipment, trash pick-up and several other smaller items.

The last of the active Interstate 55 contracts in Southeast Missouri has been completed, and motorists can enjoy an uninterrupted ride for 62 miles on the superhighway -- from Fruitland to a point south of New Madrid.

1940

Formally inducted into service in the U.S. Army, 85 National Guard enlisted men and officers from Cape Girardeau start military training in the morning that will continue at least until the end of 1941; not a single man is missing from either Service Company or the Headquarters Detachment, when Lt. Joe E. Moore reads the order of induction.

Anna Astholz, 310 S. Lorimier St., is the winner of the $25 first prize awarded in the annual Christmas contest conducted by The Southeast Missourian and 47 cooperating merchants; second and third prizes of $10 each go to C.E. Barringer and Joseph W. Mueller.

1915

The congregation of the Christian Church surprised its minister, the Rev. B. Wade Hampton, last night with a shower, bringing in enough eatables to last the preacher and his family for several weeks, if not all winter, depending upon the Hamptons' appetites.

Gov. E.W. Majors has finally filled the vacancy on the Normal School's board of regents, appointing Dr. J.P. Clark of Perryville, Missouri, to fill the unexpired term.
