Wendell "Delmer" Hanners, 85, of Jackson, formerly of Patton, Missouri, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home.

He was born April 8, 1930, in Patton to Jeffie and Metta Montgomery Hanners. He and Dorothy Sitzes were married May 14, 1948, in Bessville, Missouri.

Delmer was a graduate of the former Patton High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 7, 1952, in St. Louis. He served in the signal corps and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant Jan. 8, 1954.

Delmer and Dorothy lived and farmed many years in Patton. Delmer was a former member of Reagan's Chapel near Patton and a member of the former Masonic Lodge in Marble Hill, Missouri.

In 1993, they retired from farming and moved to Jackson and became members of New McKendree United Methodist Church. Delmer was also a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson.

Delmer and Dorothy's favorite pastimes were traveling and camping.

Loving survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy of Jackson; two daughters, Jeannie (Bill) Fadler of Jackson and Nell (the late Bill) Barrett of Godfrey, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Brian Barrett of Godfrey and Nicole Fadler of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, LaVerla Atwood; and a son-in-law, Bill Barrett.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating. The committal service will be at noon Wednesday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with full military honors.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice of church or charity.
