The Cape Girardeau City Council has authorized the Municipal Airport Board to spend up to $5,000 to install two electronic devices to facilitate landings at the airport; yesterday, the council also welcomed new city manager Paul F. Frederick.

The bond issue that has postponed the proposed town consolidation vote in Illmo and Scott City has been approved by the federal government; the approval opens the way to an actual vote on the merger; Scott City couldn't vote on such a merger until the $63,000 in bonds had been accepted by the federal government; funds from the bonds will finance water and sewer system improvements in Scott City.

1941

Under a rule proposed by retiring Circuit Judge Frank Kelly, as a member of the Cape Girardeau County Bar Association, all members of the bar will in the future rise to their feet when Circuit Court is convened.

J. Henry Caruthers goes on the bench in Common Pleas Court, succeeding Judge L.L. Bowman, who served eight years.

1916

The will of Urhain Jaques Lonhienne, who died last week, is filed for probate in Common Pleas Court; the late Belgian gave nearly all of his property to the Sturdivant Bank, which had taken care of his business since he came to this country.

Fire sweeps three buildings in Haarig early in the morning and practically ruins several businessmen in that part of town; the heaviest losers by the blaze are the Meyer and Suedekum hardware store, the Charles Kaess bakery, the Seib cigar shop and the Al Maurer blacksmith shop; George Meyer, Jake Keller and John Job own the buildings that burned.
