Laura Simon's awesome airborne photo overlooking the Mississippi River when it was above its all time high for Cape Girardeau will forever be remembered as the "go-to" documentation of a significant historical event for Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area.

People dying

We need more from Congress on control. Obama's move on guns may have only modest effect on violence, but it is a step in the right way. Not the way this Republican controlled Congress and the NRA has moved. We have more people killed in our country everyday then what is being killed by terrorists here. Kids can be killed sleeping in their own beds. Kids can be killed by playing in their own yards. You don't know if it is safe to go to a movie, mall, restaurant or anyplace anymore.

Good one

Conservative commentator Rich Lowry got off a good one in respect to those fools occupying a federal facility in Oregon. He wrote in part in a piece published in the Southeast Missourian, "Play-acting a revolution will only bring derision ..."

Tax study

I don't know how you can do an "arduous study" of the tax code and reach a conclusion that is completely wrong and can be checked against actual data in minutes. Next time I suggest you use real facts and data instead of social media sources.

City basketball

Cape's City League basketball season is underway. If you want to be entertained and see some top notch basketball talent, come out and join the ever growing number of fans who attend. Attendance records were shattered on opening day. Games are played at the Shawnee Park Center, Osage complex and the historic A.C. Brase Arena Building.

Standards

So, the republican legislature does not want to comply with federal standards with our driver license to prevent fraud when flying but wants voters to have a picture ID to prevent fraud when voting? Republican logic?

El Chapo

Now that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera is going to be sent to the U.S. for trial, there is a possibility that, however remote, he may be tried in Federal District Court in Cape.

Rebounding

While other nations continue to stumble economically, the U.S. recovery continues to exhibit strong recovery from the Bush Depression.
