HANNIBAL, Mo. -- A northeast Missouri man is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action for allegedly killing his elderly father with a crossbow and hiding the body in a freezer.

Charges were filed Monday against Carl Goldberg, 30, in the death of his father, 84-year-old Carl Maxwell. Goldberg is jailed on $1 million bond.

Maxwell was killed between December 2014 and February. A probable-cause statement stated Goldberg told police he used the crossbow to shoot Maxwell in the head and chest after an argument before hiding the body in the freezer. Police discovered the body Oct. 6, and Goldberg was arrested eight days later in Las Vegas.

He originally was charged with exploitation of the elderly before the charge was upgraded Monday.
