Jalen Williams scored a game-high 21 points to lead the top-seeded Saxony Lutheran boys basketball team to a 71-40 win over eighth-seeded New Athens in Monday's opening round of the Chester Tournament in Chester, Illinois.

William Rogers sank 17 points and Corie Williams chipped in 16 points for Saxony Lutheran (14-1). Graesen Meystedt tallied 13 points for the Crusaders, who will face fourth-seeded Cobden (Ill.) in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Appleknockers (9-6) beat fifth-seeded Marissa-Coulterville (Ill.) 58-47 in Monday's other quarterfinal to advance.

Trent Marhanka and Theo Dudeck had nine points apiece to pace New Athens (4-11), who will face the Meteors (5-10) in a consolation semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Tournament play continues today as third-seeded Chester faces sixth-seeded Dongola (Ill.) in a quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. followed by second-seeded Perryville taking on seventh-seeded Shawnee (Wolf Lake, Ill.) at 7:30 p.m.

Kelly 87, Eagle Ridge 28

Ty Householder posted a game-high 14 points as the Hawks had no problems handling the Eagles in the lopsided win at home.

Maurice Davis and Jacob McClain netted 13 points each for Kelly (7-5), which held a commanding 33-point lead at halftime.

Hunter Jones had 13 points for Eagle Ridge (4-9).

Darren Ernst grabbed seven rebounds for St. Vincent (7-7), which trailed by three points at halftime but rallied in the second half to outscore the Blue Jays by 11 points to get the win.

Steven Masterson tallied 12 points, all from behind the arc, and Nathan Bolin tossed in 10 points for Oak Ridge (2-9).
