Sales slump

Retail outlets have only themselves to blame for their slumps in sales. On Tuesday morning at 10:30 I went to the mall; I shopped in J.C. Penney, Macy's and six stores in between. I was well-groomed, dress nicely in business casual dress, and carrying an expensive designer bag. I had just over $400 to spend on some gifts for someone overseas who wanted me to shop for him for birthday gifts. In one store, I entered and nobody was working on the floor. I walked around, waited, hollered into the storeroom and waited more. Ten minutes -- I kept track -- later, I left. In another store, the sales clerk was reading a paperback while the store obviously needed tending to. I walked around for quite awhile, with her never once acknowledging I was there. In another store, one lady was standing at the register cleaning out her nails with an unbent paperclip while another sat on the cash register counter while they gossiped about their boss and coworkers. This type of horrible service was the norm for the day. Not one of these sales people was a teen or college student; they were all adults in their 30s and 40s. Old enough to know better.

Burdensome

Congressman Jason Smith is on a mission to try to bring an end to burdensome and unnecessary government regulations. I am on a mission to see to it that we rid ourselves (at the ballot box) of a burdensome and unnecessary lawmaker who wants to end burdensome and unnecessary government regulations. Ironically, the legislator is none other than Congressman Jason Smith.

Roundabout

I can't believe they have decided to put in a roundabout on Independence Street beside the armory. They claim they are doing so because of fewer accidents. I haven't heard of any accident at Mount Auburn and Hopper yet. That traffic light is the best in town. Very little waiting time from any direction. I think it is time to vote in some new city leaders.

Pet danger

Pet owners, if you have an outside pet please heed the warnings of the weather personnel when they tell you to bring your pet inside during severe cold weather. Also make sure you have warm bedding in their shelter, extra food and water that isn't frozen during normal cold weather. I would also urge neighbors to call animal control if they observe an animal forced to stay outside without shelter, food or water. Not providing these needs is animal abuse, plain and simple.
