Demolition of four houses on Sunset Court is underway to make room for a three-story parking garage that will be built by Southeast Hospital. The multilevel parking facility, situated west of the hospital, will compensate for about 150 parking spaces that will be eliminated after Southeast builds an addition on the east end of the hospital.

1966

The Naval Reserve Training Center unit will be sent to Colorado in March to help construct a Boy Scout camp as its project for its annual active duty time. The 27 Seabees will be at Elmert, Colorado, 65 miles southeast of Denver, for two weeks.

Walter H. "Doc" Ford, former Cape Girardeau mayor, has filed as a candidate for Cape Girardeau County Court judge from the Second District. He filed on the Democratic ticket and will be running for the office now held by Associate Judge Arnold Roth.

Allen L. Oliver, Cape Girardeau attorney, was elected president of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts yesterday at the council's annual meeting at Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Oliver succeeds Dr. W.W. Parker, president of the Teachers College, who was council head for two years.

Martin Roth, a Central High School teacher, has been called to active Army service. He went to Fort Snelling, Minnesota, this weekend. Roth has a reserve officer rank of captain.

1916

Friends here learn of the death of Mrs. R.C. Norton, widow of a former president of the Cape Girardeau Normal School. Mrs. Norton, 73, died two weeks ago at Trenton, Missouri. The former president died about five years ago.

Mike Delaney, a well-known odd-job character about town, fell off a beer wagon last night and dislocated one hip so badly he is out of commission. Delaney accompanied Frazier Ray with a load of beer to Fornfelt. Returning with empty cases stacked seven high, he and Ray sat on top. Delaney failed to duck under the viaduct on the Scott County road, where the Houck railroad crosses it, and was knocked from his high perch.
