UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. -- The death of a 70-year-old man in University City marks the third time since 2013 a victim has been stabbed fatally inside a home in the St. Louis suburb. Police are investigating to determine whether there is a connection.

August Lombardo was killed inside his two-family home. A co-worker found his body about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Two other men were stabbed to death in a University City home in 2013. The killings were within a block of each other. Robbery was a factor in each, and the victims were found when concerned relatives or co-workers noticed they failed to show up for work. All three remain unsolved.

Police said the similarities have not gone unnoticed and are being checked.

All three killings remain unsolved. Sgt. Mike Davis said there is no new information in the 2013 killings of Gary Workes, 59, or his neighbor, Maurice "Bud" Karzin, 77.

"We can't determine if they are related or not," Davis said. "We look at all similarities."

Lombardo's co-worker used a key, supplied by Lombardo, to go inside. The body was found in Lombardo's bedroom on the first floor, with several stab wounds. Police said there had been a struggle and possibly a robbery.

The co-worker had spoken with Lombardo on Tuesday night.

Workes and Karzin were found dead inside Workes' apartment June 13, 2013. Police checked on them after Workes failed to show up for his job as a delivery driver for the Schnucks grocery chain.
