It didn't take long for Matt Borgschulte to return to the Southeast Missouri State baseball team.

Borgschulte was the Redhawks' volunteer assistant last season and announced his departure for an assistant coaching position at Tusculum College on August 7.

Now he's coming back to Cape Girardeau to serve as Southeast's hitting coach. Coach Steve Bieser announced Borgschulte as his new assistant via Twitter on Thursday and the athletic department officially announced the hire on Tuesday.

Joe Migliaccio is expected to be the Redhawks' volunteer assistant this season, but an official announcement has not been made.

"I am very excited to have Matt back in our program as our hitting coach," Bieser said in a press release. "Matt was able to learn our system as well as our pitch recognition program from his time as our volunteer coach last season. He's a young guy with a bright coaching future ahead of him. I expect Matt to help guide our program to many more successes."

Borgschulte, who was with the program when it repeated as the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion last year, replaces Dillon Lawson as hitting coach. Lawson took the same position with the Tri-City Valleycats, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, earlier this month.

Borgschulte will also coach the outfielders, assist with recruiting and perform administrative duties as well, according to the press release.

Borgschulte, a St. Louis native, transferred to Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, from Western Kentucky, and played two years with the Panthers.

Borgschulte, who was a second-team All-American selection by Daktronics and the Midwest Region Player of the Year, became the program's first All-American ever as a senior in 2013. His 11 home runs, 60 RBIs and 125 total bases set single-season records for the program.

He graduated from Drury with a degree in sport management in December 2013 and spent a year as the program's volunteer assistant during which the Panthers won the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship.

"I'm elated about becoming the new hitting coach at Southeast Missouri," Borgschulte said. "I cannot thank Coach Bieser and the Athletic Department enough for giving me the opportunity to return to Cape Girardeau. It's hard to imagine that someone teaches and handles their players and coaches better than Coach Bieser. I'm glad to be back as part of the winning tradition here at Southeast and I look forward to helping us get to the next level."

The Redhawks begin the season Feb. 19 at Lamar.
