The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has granted Scott City $203,500 to help fund construction of sewer lines to serve the city's industrial park; the almost 16,000 feet of sewer lines will provide services for Havco Wood Products Inc., Industrial Fuels and Resources Inc., Rhodes Oil Co. and about 15 other commercial and service industries in the industrial park.

Michael D. Kohlfeld of Cape Girardeau has been recognized with the 1991 Catholic Elementary School Distinguished Graduate Award, given by the National Catholic Education Association.

1966

County Clerk Rusby C. Crites reports Cape Girardeau County has received official notification from the state auditor's office the county will go to a second-class form of government Jan. 1, 1967; under this form of government, county officials, who now receive pay in the form of fees and commissions in addition to or in lieu of salaries, all will be on straight salary.

Total retail sales in Cape Girardeau during the last calendar year reached $62,082,452.02, an increase of more than $200,000 over the 1964 mark.

1941

A petition with 148 signatures of property owners has been presented to the Cape Girardeau County Court asking for the dissolution of the Delta Special Road District; the court is expected to set a date for a special election on the issue within the next few days; if the district is dissolved, the area will become part of County Road District No. 2.

Adoption by the Cape Girardeau City Council of a merchants' license tax ordinance providing a rate of $1 per $1,000 gross business done is virtually certain; if adopted, the ordinance would be similar to one asked in an initiative petition filed Saturday and similar also to one in effect prior to action of the State Supreme Court last year in holding one section of it void.

1916

The Cape Girardeau Commercial Club has made arrangements with the Leming Lumber Co. for the removal of its plant from Rombauer, Missouri, to Cape Girardeau; it will be near the present Leming mill as soon as the buildings can be constructed; in other club news, an executive committee recommends the proposal of Miesner Manufacturing Co. to locate here be turned down.

Carl Umbeck, Cape Girardeau's aggressive Broadway grocer, is the first man to throw his hat into the political ring for city council; he has Charles McDonald circulating his petition for the council in the second ward.
