MARION, Ohio — Dora Shelby Bomar, 87, a resident of Marion, Ohio, and formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Presidential Center Home Health Care in Marion, Ohio.

On Feb. 27, 1929, Dora was born in Sikeston, Missouri, one of 12 children, to the late Robert and Hallie Watson Shelby. She graduated from Diehlstadt (Missouri) High School and worked at the Mississippi County Courthouse in Charleston, Missouri.

On March 8, 1951, she married Richard Harrison Bomar, who preceded her in death Jan. 22, 2011. They shared 60 years of marriage together, and the first 26 years were dedicated to Richard’s career in the U.S. Air Force.

Dora traveled with Richard to his assigned stations throughout the world. Dora and Richard settled in Marion, Illinois, in 1973. At this time Dora worked for a cardiologist for seven years. Moving to Cape Girardeau in 1989, she was employed by Wal-Mart as a people greeter and retired from that position after 25 years of service. During Dora’s life, she dedicated herself to taking care of her family.

Surviving members are a daughter and daughter-in-law, Alice F. Bomar and Susan McDaniel, both of Marion, Ohio; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Rick and Becky Wagganer Bomar of Cape Girardeau; two great-grandchildren, Bethany Jo Bomar and Ryker H. Bomar, both of Cape Girardeau; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Joan Peters Shelby of Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters, Maxine “Mac” Hill of Sikeston and Lucille “Joy” Sellars Shelby of Encino, California.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Craig Bomar; a great-granddaughter, Emma Dean Bomar; four brothers, Donald “Don” Shelby, Kermit Shelby and two infants; and four sisters, Hazel Strickland, Freida Kindsey, Verna Schaffer and Jo Whitehead.

A special thank you and appreciation to Susan M. McDaniel. There are not enough words to express our thanks for taking care of Dora for nearly two years. Your generosity, compassion, safekeeping and care for Dora was extraordinarily unselfish.

Visitation will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Monday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at IOOF Cemetery. Father David Hulshof, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church of Cape Girardeau, will officiate. Interment will be under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
