1991

The former Lenco Electronics Division building and equipment at Jackson were sold yesterday during an auction that attracted more than 100 bidders; David Hoelscher, president of NLC, which bought Lenco, said the auction was used to sell excess assets of the company.

Superintendent of schools Arthur Turner was released from his daily school-district duties during a meeting Tuesday of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education; he was released from his "daily contractual duties" so he can pursue other job opportunities.

1966

Dressed as an early-day Methodist circuit rider, the Rev. Sidney Dillinger of McCracken, Kansas, will leave Old McKendree Chapel near Cape Girardeau at 7 a.m. March 28 on an 800-mile horseback ride to Baltimore; he's making the trip as part of the celebration of the bicentennial of American Methodism at Baltimore from April 21 to 28.

Construction of a new church for St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Scott City will begin this spring, says the pastor, the Rev. Thomas A. Allen; the edifice will be on Sycamore and Fifth streets, replacing the present church whose cornerstone was laid in 1912; the present church will be converted into a parish hall.

1941

Electrification facilities for rural Cape Girardeau County under government supervision are being sought again; a meeting has been called for tomorrow evening to discuss at least one proposal being advanced for the service; three rural cooperatives, already in operation with lines built through loans of the federally-financed Rural Electrification Administration, have been asked to submit proposals for the formation of a Cape County unit.

The Cape County Historical Society and the city, interested in beautifying historic Fort A, at the east end of Bellevue Street and overlooking the river, may have a development project worked out soon.

1916

Max Brenneissen, one of the oldest residents of Scott County, dies this morning at his home in North Illmo, an addition to Fornfelt; Brenneissen would have reached the age of 82 had he lived until July 12; he was a farmer until two years ago; he devoted most of his time while on the farm to his vinyard, having one of the finest in Southeast Missouri, and he had a reputation as a wine maker.

Two trained Salvation Army workers from Chicago arrived here yesterday; the two women will open a permanent headquarters in Cape Girardeau.
