Cyclist Hannah Harmon, 21, of Perryville, Missouri, was hit by a car Monday while riding in a cross-country cycling trip near Panama City, Florida. She is recovering in a Panama City hospital.

Harmon was struck by a car from behind when trying to make a left turn. She landed hard on her lower back and side.

In a Facebook video, Harmon and her father, Shane, said CAT scans and X-rays did not show injuries. Shane Harmon said she still is in quite a bit of pain, and there is some worry she may have a concussion. Hannah told Shane on Monday she planned to rest a few days but continue riding.

Hannah Harmon began riding March 21 from Fruitland Community Church. The goal of the ride is to raise awareness against human trafficking. Hannah Harmon was inspired by a human-trafficking victim she met during a mission trip in Romania.

“I’m unbelievably impressed with her courage and determination,” Fruitland Community Church pastor Mike Parry said. “I think some folks would assume she would want to come home, but not Hannah.”

She has been staying with host families along the route, including in Havana, Florida. That family has brought up the idea of buying Hannah a new bike because the old one was severely damaged during the crash. Hannah Harmon, in a Facebook video, said a local Panama City bike shop had offered to help with repairs or a new bike.

“People are stepping up,” Shane Harmon said. “She’s ready to get going.”

Hannah Harmon was on her way to Destin, Florida. An upcoming stop on her journey was planned for Houston, although Shane Harmon has called host families and welcoming parties to inform them Hannah may be coming later than expected.

Hannah Harmon received bike advice and equipment at Cyclewerx in Cape Girardeau. Cyclewerx owner John Dodd admired Hannah’s determination to continue with her ride.

“She’s a very positive person,” Dodd said. “She has an indelible spirit.”
