Two suspects detained after fatal shooting in Sikeston

One suspect in a deadly shooting Sunday in Sikeston, Missouri, was apprehended Monday evening after a search by the SEMO Major Case Squad.

Orlando “TJ” Sheron Jr., 20, of Sikeston was discovered to be hiding out in a hotel near Caruthersville, Missouri, according to a Sikeston Department of Public Safety news release.

Officers lured Sheron away from his hotel room and took him into custody about 6 p.m. Monday after a brief foot pursuit.

The other suspect was arrested before midnight Sunday by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Sikeston officers went to a shots-fired call about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Roberta Rowe Park near Washington and Alabama streets, according to a department news release.

Officers found one victim, James “Jay” Harris, 31, of Sikeston with a bullet wound to his abdomen and another victim who was shot in the leg, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed by Sikeston Department of Public Safety Detective Flint Dees.

Both victims were taken to a hospital. Harris was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m.

A witness standing near the basketball courts in the park said Harris waved to Sheron, as if Harris were asking Sheron to come over to Washington

Street, according to the affidavit.

Harris and Kalean Howard, 20, were together as Sheron approached. Sheron reached into his waistband, pulled out a black handgun and shot at Harris twice as Harris turned away, according to the affidavit.

The witness said one of the bullets struck Harris in the abdomen or side. Sheron then fired at Howard twice, the affidavit stated.

At the same time, Jeterrence Harris, 21, of Sikeston shot at James Harris and Howard three times while standing on the southeast corner of the Roberta Rowe Park parking lot, according to Dees’ affidavit.

Officers collected three spent shell casings near the area where Jeterrence Harris fired, and one spent shell casing was found near the spot where Sheron was shooting, according to the affidavit.

Sheron and Jeterrence Harris were charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action by Scott County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Boyd.

According to the affidavit, Jeterrence Harris and Sheron are associates and suspected members of the Brick Squad Monopoly street gang.

Sheron was released on bond in a first-degree assault and armed criminal action case from July 30, 2015, involving a shootout on John R Boulevard.

Sheron’s bond is set at $500,000, cash only.

Jeterrence Harris’ bond is set at $250,000, cash only.
