Downtown streets briefly blocked after apparent suicide

Cape Girardeau police said a person committed suicide about 5 p.m. on the city’s riverfront near the intersection of Broadway and Water Street.

“There was nothing obvious to suggest that it was anything except a suicide at this point,” Cape Girardeau public information officer Adam Glueck said.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton said the person died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police and Cape Girardeau Fire Department vehicles briefly blocked the intersection during the investigation.
