The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission is considering designating Old Lorimier Cemetery as a historic landmark in an effort to protect and preserve the historic burial ground; the cemetery has been vandalized repeatedly over the years.

City and county officials are praising a new local use tax on out-of-state sellers, because it will bring a much needed boost to sales-tax revenue that has showed signs of leveling off the last few years; a 5 percent revenue increase is expected for both the city and county.

1966

The exit ramp from the southbound lane of Interstate 55 at Wedekind Park is turning into a driver's hazard for northbound motorists on U.S. 61; four people were injured slightly Saturday in a collision there when one vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and crashed into a northbound car on U.S. 61; this was the fourth accident at that intersection this year.

Under terms of a 1952 city ordinance, the sale of certain types of fireworks becomes legal in Cape Girardeau and will continue through July 4; so far, four of the $10 special licenses to sell fireworks have been issued by the city clerk's office; the fireworks being sold are those with visual effects; such noisemakers as firecrackers are prohibited.

1941

Word is received from Washington, D.C., that President Roosevelt has approved a $194,370 WPA allotment for construction of an airport near Dutchtown; an advanced training school for pilots will be established at the airport.

Because of short rainfall in this district, numerous stock men and owners of milk cows are having to haul water for their livestock, and some have to procure water for household needs in the same manner; numerous families are hauling water from city lines, at the new park on U.S. 61 and from Fairground Park.

1916

It is the first time in the history of Cape Girardeau, and also in the history of the Dr. E.J. Forsythe evangelistic party, that it has become necessary during a revival to build another tabernacle in another part of the city; such is the situation here, where a smaller tabernacle has been erected in the lowland in the Red Star Addition north of Sloan's Creek; the tabernacle was completed in a day, and yesterday evening, the Rev. Roy Forsythe preached the first sermon there.

J.F. Wichterich reported at Monday's city council meeting the city of Cape Girardeau now numbers 10,734; had the council agreed to the expansion of the city limits as proposed recently, 3,000 more people would have been counted in the census.
