Design approval has been given by the General Services Administration for Cape Girardeau's new federal building; the structure, to be two stories high and to have a white, four-columned portico, is scheduled to be built on the site of the former post-office building at Broadway and North Fountain Street.

The Cape Girardeau Public Library has a new administrative head; Martha Maxwell, coordinator of the Southeast Missouri Library Service Federation, was named by city manager Paul F. Frederick as the new public librarian here, succeeding Gene Martin.

1941

The nation's second peacetime military conscription registration July 1, designed for young men who have passed their 21st birthdays since last Oct. 16, will be handled in two places for Cape Girardeau County eligibles; the local draft board designates the American Legion Hall as the site in Cape Girardeau and the second floor of the Kneibert Building in Jackson.

After being closed three weeks for extensive remodeling and redecoration, both inside and out, the Idan-Ha Barber Shop reopens under the management of J.V. Pool, who recently bought the interest of Frank Taylor; Louis Matthews will be associated with Pool in the shop.

1916

Despite the fact rain fell in torrents most all afternoon and night yesterday, about 500 people visited the opening of the Lorberg Furniture and Undertaking Co. on Good Hope Street; they got to see a cooking demonstration by Mrs. Lillian Clark Thornton and sample her baking.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Frank L. Wilcox, a consulting engineer of St. Louis, has drawn up plans for a waterworks and sewer system for Chaffee, which will be decided upon at a special election; the drawings don't provide for water mains east of the railroad, but this feature will be remedied.
