THEBES, Ill. -- While high water on the Mississippi River continues to delay completion of a 2.7 miles of relocated Highway 3 between Gale and Thebes, Illinois, site work has started for the final 4.3 miles of relocated highway between Thebes and Twente Crossing Road, north of Olive Branch, Illinois.

Officials of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, Arkansas, have signed papers to purchase 23 acres for construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cape Girardeau; the land is being purchased from Drury Development Corp; the site is southwest of the Route K/Interstate 55 intersection in Drury's Cape West Business Park.

The Bootheel Hunters Inc. had a record attendance of 143 registered archers yesterday at its Shawnee League invitational tournament here; Don Kiel, a professional archer from Granite City, Illinois, topped the tournament with a total score of 1,032.

Mayor J Ronald Fischer snips the ribbon to open the OSCO Drug Store at 26 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau; the Ross Young family is the owner and builder of the store; manager is Ernie Lamken.

Sizzling weather holds on, the ninth day with the mercury above the 90-degree mark; yesterday's high was 95 degrees, equaling the highest temperature of the year set a week ago today; the same reading is registered this afternoon at 2 p.m.; meanwhile, crops in the immediate area are suffering; dozens of families, chiefly living on farms near the city, are hauling water from the city parks.

The Cape Girardeau City Council sets the municipal tax rate for the coming year at 78 cents on the $100 assessed valuation, the same rate as the current year; in addition, the council also votes preparation of an ordinance requiring an annual $10 license sticker for all pinball machines operated within the city.

An interesting meeting was held last night at the Forsythe tabernacle; it had been announced the evening service would be set aside especially for black people, and about 300 assembled to hear the evangelist; they were asked to sing hymns of their own selection, and a small choir hastily was organized; the song service was a fine one, with Cecil Graves on the piano instead of the regular player.

Glenna, the little 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Curry of 349 N. Henderson Ave., suffers two broken bones in her right arm and narrowly escapes death, when she falls from a second-story window to the ground, a distance of about 20 feet.
