The Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport is scheduled to become a part of a nationwide automated weather-reporting network in September 1993; the Automated Surface Observation System is sponsored by the U.S. departments of Commerce, Transportation and Defense.

The third annual Donnie's Speed & Custom Saturday Night Super Cruise draws about 100 vehicles to Klaus Park, down from the usual 175 to 200 vehicles; from 1,000 to 1,500 spectators are expected to attend the show.

1966

Ken Hargens, head track and assistant grid coach at Cape Girardeau Central High School, has been elevated to the newly created position of director of student activities; the position, which replaces the post of athletic director, includes the scheduling of athletic games, as well as other school activities such as debates, speech, music, assembly programs, banquets and proms.

A sun-baked Cape Girardeau continues to suffer with much of the remainder of the Midwest from one of the worst heat waves in recent years; each day, it seems, is hotter than the last; the mercury hit a new season hight yesterday, with a maximum reading of 105 at the municipal airport; it was the third consecutive day of 100-degree-plus weather here.

1941

Installation of the roof on the new Maple Avenue Methodist Church was completed Thursday, and work has started on the interior of the church; the old church building, a frame structure, has been moved to a site north of and adjacent to the new church and will be used as a Sunday school plant.

The Rev. Bernard S. Groner, who has served St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Illmo-Fornfelt for 19 years, has been transferred to Freeburg, Missouri, in Osage County; he will be succeeded at Illmo by the Rev. Albert Weinig of Lawrencetown, Missouri, in Ste. Genevieve County.

1916

I. Ben Miller's magnificent new ice cream and candy manufacturing plant on South Spanish Street begins operations; the big ice-making plant was put into operation a week ago, and enough ice cream was frozen at the old plant and stored at the new to supply customers until the new machinery is working properly.

Enemies of the office of farm adviser have again started an agitation to oust the farm agent from this county; a petition is being circulated asking the County Court to submit the proposition to the voters of the county at the general election this fall.
