Searing heat keeps the pressure on in the Cape Girardeau area, which is sweltering through one of the worst and most prolonged invasions of torrid air in years; the thermometer read 104 degrees late yesterday afternoon at the airport, the fourth day in succession to top the century mark; the heat was so intense yesterday, it caused the concrete pavement to buckle on a section of Caruthers Street in front of Central High School.

Naamon D. Eaker, 28, a former Cape Girardeau policeman, has been appointed lifeguard at the Trail of Tears State Park; Eaker's duties will be to stay on the beach of Lake Boutin and keep it clean and orderly.

1941

Cape Girardeau Teachers College will receive $466,000 on which to operate during the coming biennium when Gov. Forrest C. Donnell signs the appropriation bill, passed by the General Assembly; W.W. Parker, president of the college, said this amount is nearly $4,000 under what was actually spent by the school during the biennium just ended.

Workers start removing the dirt from beneath Trinity Lutheran Church preparatory for construction of a basement; R.L. Cook is directing the removal of the dirt, while the concrete work will be in charge of William Klaproth, the general contractor; along with approximately 300 yards of dirt to be removed from under the structure, three sandstone walls upon which joists are built also will be removed.

1916

Two thousand or more people gather in the evening in Courthouse Park to hear John Swanger, Republican candidate for governor, speak; it is the largest political gathering of Republicans since President Taft was greeted by 10,000 people several years ago on his trip down the Mississippi River; Swanger makes a big hit, declaring he is "unequivocally opposed to state-wide prohibition."

The Cape Girardeau City Council, in the market for a motorized fire engine, meets in the evening to hear representatives of the various fire-fighting companies explain the good qualities of their machines.
