__NEW THEATER OPENS IN SIKESTON__

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Malco Sikeston Cinema & Grill opened June 9 at 1218 Cinema Drive in Sikeston, off Highway 60 and Hennings Road in the Cotton Ridge Development, the Sikeston Standard Democrat reported. The theater has eight stadium-seating auditoriums, state-of-the-art Dolby 7.1 digital surround sound and 3-D projection. The auditoriums also have wall-to-wall curved screens that include a 40-foot large-format Clarus screen. The lobby includes a cinema lounge with space for guests to have a meal or meet with friends before the show. The theater has an expanded concession menu with traditional movie snacks of popcorn, candy, nachos and pretzels, along with hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, chicken tenders and french fries. The theater has a party room and game room and is available for corporate rentals and worship space. A ribbon cutting was held June 9 with the Sikeston Regional Chamber of Commerce. Malco Theatres also operates the Malco Sikeston Trio, which remains open in addition to the Sikeston Cinema & Grill.

__HERTZ CLOSES IN CAPE__

Hertz Car Rental at 879 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau has closed. A representative for the company confirmed the news, but no reason for the closure was given.

__JACKSON CHAMBER HOLDS RIBBON CUTTINGS__

Patti Kenser, general manager of the new Malco Sikeston Cinema & Grill, sets up a display at the concession counter Tuesday morning. Final preparations are being made for the Thursday opening of the center that is located at 1218 Cinema Drive off Highway 60 and Hennings Road in the Cotton Ridge Development.

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce held the following ribbon cuttings: Hendrickson Business Advisors on June 13, for its new location at 715 N. Clark St. in Cape Girardeau; USA Mortgage, 1353 N. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau, on June 16; Kelly Waller American Family Insurance, 189 N. Lacey in Jackson, on July 7; and the JIDC spec building, 2550 Industrial Drive in Jackson, on June 28.

__DANCE STUDIO OPENS IN CAPE__

Broken and Redeemed LLC, 1217 N. Kingshighway, Suite 250 in Cape Girardeau, is a dance studio owned by Jimmie Miller. The anticipated opening date was July 5.

__QUIZNOS CLOSES, REOPENS AS SMOKEHOUSE 61__

On Friday, June 24, the Quiznos at the corner of William Street and Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau closed. According to a sign on the door, the restaurant was to reopen on July 1 as Smokehouse 61. The new restaurant will continue to serve sandwiches, soups and salads, but also will introduce smoked barbecue to the menu.

__MOZARK REALTY IS OFFICE OF THE YEAR__

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Mozark Realty of Poplar Bluff was named Mossy Oak Properties Office of the Year during the company's recent meeting in Starksville, Mississippi. Lucas Edington is broker/owner of Mozark Realty. The Office of the Year award is given annually to the office that not only achieves a high sales volume, but also embodies the core values that Mossy Oak Properties bases its business on. The award, which was for the 2015 fiscal year, was the first for the Southeast Missouri brokerage.

__KYLE'S CARWASH COMPLETES REMODEL__

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting in June to open the newly remodeled Kyle's Carwash at 102 S. Westwood Blvd. Kyle Boatner is owner and operator of the business.

__WHITE WEDDINGS OPENS IN FARMINGTON__

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- White Weddings opened in February at 103 E. Columbia St. in Farmington, the Park Hills Daily Journal reported. Kristen White, who studied hospitality and restaurant management at Missouri State University, owns the business, which sells wedding apparel, formal wear and accessories.

__SAVE-A-LOT CLOSES JACKSON STORE__

The Save-A-Lot grocery store on East Jackson Boulevard in Jackson is no longer in business. A representative for the Jackson grocer said the store closed June 23. Employees were told the store was spending more money than it was making, the representative said, which was the reason for its closing. Jim Maevers owns the property through Maevers Investments LLC. He said Maevers Investments is pursuing other tenants for the location.

__MALDEN CHAMBER HOLDS RIBBON CUTTINGS__

MALDEN, Mo. -- The Malden Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting in June for the grand opening of Mona's Diner at 800 S. Madison St., owned by Twyla Robertson. The diner is in the former Daily Bread building. The chamber also held a ribbon cutting for Harry Blackwell Ford, which opened a parts department.

__MASSAGE THERAPIST SETS UP SHOP IN DEXTER__

DEXTER, Mo. -- McKenna Landers, LMT opened June 13 at 112 W. Stoddard St. in downtown Dexter. Owner McKenna Landers has four years of massage therapy experience and has opened her own studio, where she offers Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, hot stone, cupping and sports massages by appointment only. She plans to add a retail section in the future. Landers previously worked at Fitness Connection.

__BLOOMFIELD ROAD LANDSCAPE MOVING TO SCOTT CITY__

Bloomfield Road Landscape is moving to a new facility on East Outer Road along Interstate 55 in Scott City. The move is prompted by a need for more visibility and a desire to grow the business. When the new facility is ready, the landscaping company will move from its current location on Blackford Lane, near Dalhousie Golf Club and Strack Quarries in Cape Girardeau. Owner Travis Burger purchased the landscape business about a year and a half ago, and it has been in operation since 2000. He plans to offer the same services in the new location and is considering ways to expand after the move. Burger said work began in late June to prepare the land for the new construction. He expects the new facility to be ready by March or April.

__PERRYVILLE CHAMBER HOSTS RIBBON CUTTING__

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Perryville Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting June 30 at Discount Liquor and Tobacco, 107 E. Ste. Maries St. in Perryville.

BAR AND GRILL OPENS IN GORDONVILLE

A new bar and grill is opening in Gordonville. Keith Quade and Scott Lindsay, masons by trade, remodeled the building that once housed West Side Bar and Grill and are preparing to open Trisha's Bar and Grill this month. Quade and Lindsay agreed to name the bar in honor of Quade's late wife, who died from breast cancer. The two rebuilt the kitchen and remodeled the bar. They built a menu around a masonry theme, featuring "build your own burgers" called Bricklayer Burgers, and followed the same idea with submarine sandwiches: Scaffold Subs. Quade said the restaurant will offer an all-day breakfast menu as well. Quade said he has hired six employees to run the bar and grill. Michelle McGuire, who is a secretary at Keith Quade Masonry on a part-time basis, will manage Trisha's.

__AREA RADIO STATIONS HONORED__

Broadcasters and radio stations in the Withers Broadcasting network were honored during the award ceremony at this year's Missouri Broadcasters Association Annual Convention in Branson, Missouri. KBXB-FM in Sikeston, Missouri, received a first-place award for best local website. KRHW-AM/FM in Sikeston earned first place in documentary/public affairs/special program for its Weekend Edition. Cape Girardeau's KAPE-AM/FM earned a certificate of merit for its Weekend Edition. Also during the convention, Rick Lambert, chief operator officer for Withers Broadcasting, was named as a chairman of the Missouri Broadcasters Association board of directors.

__ST. LOUIS DISTRIBUTOR ACQUIRES CAPE ELECTRICAL__

Cape Electrical Supply, a company headquartered in Cape Girardeau that has served Southeast Missouri since 1953, has been acquired by Graybar, an employee-owned St. Louis-based distributor of electrical, communications and data-networking products and provider of related supply-chain management and logistics services. The transaction was finalized July1. The acquisition was made to expand Graybar's reach. Graybar will allow the company to continue as it has while providing financial support and resources to make Cape Electrical stronger, said Kyle Thoma, president and CEO of Cape Electrical Supply. Though there may be changes within the company, there are no plans to cut employees at this time, Thoma said. Cape Electrical Supply will retain its name and staff and will function as a subsidiary of Graybar. Cape Electrical Supply distributes electrical wholesale products to commercial, residential and industrial markets and assists those markets with on-site management. The company employs about 200 people throughout its 17 branches in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama. In Cape Girardeau alone, Cape Electrical Supply employs 75 people.

__RANKEN TO OPEN SATELLITE CAMPUS IN PERRYVILLE__

Ranken Technical College, a private, not-for-profit, degree-granting institution, is opening a satellite campus in Perryville. Its main campus in St. Louis offers programs in fields such as auto repair, construction, information technology and manufacturing. Curriculum for the Perryville facility has yet to be determined. “We’re actually going to do a survey, either through the [Economic Development Authority] or the chamber [of commerce], and we’re going to find out what the industry needs here,” Stan Shoun, president of Ranken Technical College, said on June 14. He anticipates three primary focuses: industrial engineering, construction and transportation and logistics. He expects the college, which will be on Walters Lane, to entice students in from a considerable distance. If demand calls for it, housing facilities could be built. A soft opening of the new facility is expected in January.

__PERRYVILLE FUNERAL HOME NO LONGER OPERATING__

After serving Perry County for more than 20 years, Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville has closed. “They do not have an establishment license anymore, which means they cannot conduct funerals,” said Josh Ford of Ford and Sons Funeral Home, based in Cape Girardeau. He said the Millers carry a pre-need license, which is issued to those wanting to sell life insurance and fixed annuities for funeral prearrangement. Through an ad in the Southeast Missourian, Ford & Sons Funeral Home and Young and Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Perryville announced they would attempt to honor pre-need contracts purchased from Miller Family Funeral Home. The business is owned by Herbert and Kathleen Miller; Herbert Miller was Perry County coroner for 20 years. In 2015, he resigned as coroner after a conviction of felony financial exploitation of the elderly and theft. In February, the couple filed for bankruptcy in the Southeastern Division of the Eastern District of Missouri’s U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

__HASTINGS’ PARENT COMPANY FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY__

Another national company with ties to Southeast Missouri initiated filings June 13 for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Draw Another Circle, the parent company of Hastings Entertainment LLC and its sister brands, SPImages and MovieStop, is evaluating offers for the assets of Hastings in an effort to maximize stakeholder value. According to a news release, Hastings will continue to operate as usual while potential offers are evaluated. Draw Another Circle secured $90 million in new debtor-in-possession financing to help ensure the businesses can meet financial commitments. Several customer programs were discontinued on the heels of the announcement. Hastings no longer accepts or honors customer deposits for future movie purchases; game rentals no longer are available; the store’s buyback program has been suspended; and gift cards expired July 13. Hastings opened its first store in 1968. It has operated its 22,000-square-foot Town Plaza location in Cape Girardeau since 1995. Neither Hastings nor its parent company has announced plans for closing.
