A crowd of more than 1,400 people turn out for Fly Cape Aviation Days, despite sweltering heat that prompts many spectators to seek shade beneath the wings of some of the huge aircraft displayed; the open house and air show a Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport will continue tomorrow afternoon

Southeast Missouri Hospital's School of Nursing will start classes Monday morning at its new facilities at 2851 Professional Court; 16 area students will make up the first class, which offers a one-year program for licensed practical nurses wanting to become registered nurses.

1966

Democratic incumbents in county-wide races here handily turned aside challenges in Tuesday's primary election, while in Cape Girardeau, Earl S. Mackey won the Democratic nomination for state representative from the city district over W.F. McKee; one officeholder who fell in Tuesday's balloting was A.H. Bender, county judge of the first district, who was defeated in the Democratic primary by Garland Powell.

The million-dollar-plus Language Arts Building on the State College campus will be ready for occupancy this fall; the building, constructed by the Minner Construction Co. of St. Louis for $1,103,600, contains 39 classrooms, an auditorium that seats 540 people, a language-arts laboratory, a speech clinic and office space for 89 people.

1941

The Rev. Elbert Cole of St. Louis occupies the pulpit at Centenary Methodist Church; he will serve the church during August in the absence of the vacationing pastor, the Rev. Don E. Schooler.

Three bandits, one brandishing a pistol, halted a car occupied by two Girardeans -- E.M. Bissell and Delores Bucher -- last night, robbed Bissell of about $15 in cash, and after tying him to a tree in a nearby field, fled in his automobile; the incident took place on Wilson Road, about a mile south of Bloomfield Road.

1916

The two exceedingly close races in Southeast Missouri, the outcome of which isn't yet definitely known, are those between Dave Hill of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Bob Smith of Dunklin County for Congress and between Harry Alexander of Cape Girardeau and O.S. Harrison of Dunklin County for state Senate on the Democratic ticket.

The Water & Light Co. has started work placing fire hydrants in the middle of each block on Broadway out as far as Pacific Street; the hydrants are being placed on the south side of the street.
