Jackie Verseman hammered nine kills and served four aces to lead St. Vincent to a three-set victory at home over Jackson, 26-24, 18-25 and 25-18.

Both teams were making their season debuts.

Kara Kassel added six kills for St. Vincent (1-0). Katie Schnurbusch notched 13 digs while Molly Myers and Megyn Huber put up four blocks apiece for the host Indians.

Hannah Hunt recorded 12 kills and seven digs to pace Jackson (0-1). Olivia Hallet recorded 10 kills and Olivia Wendel added six kills and two blocks for the visiting Indians. Hannah Wilson notched 14 digs and two aces while Malary Burger contributed 17 assists and 13 digs for Jackson. Lainey Broussard tallied 12 assists and six digs.

Valle Catholic 25 25, Perryville 14 18

Maci Hotop had two kills as the Pirates were swept in straight sets by the traditional powerhouse Warriors on the road in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., in both teams' season openers.

Sydney Spears notched three digs and Taylor Weber served three aces for Perryville (0-1).

The Rams bounced back and eked out a nailbiter of a victory in the second set after a tough first set, but couldn't finish in the final game to fall to the Eagles on the road in Hillsboro, Mo., in both teams' first game of the season.

Woodland Inv. Tournament

The Advance volleyball team finished 5-1 in Pool A on Tuesday to draw the top seed at the Woodland Invitational Tournament.

The Hornets crushed Leopold (19-6, 19-7) and swept Saxony Lutheran (19-11, 19-13) before splitting Woodland (14-19, 19-6). The host Cardinals tied Saxony (19-14, 15-19) and Leopold (19-15, 15-19) to finish 3-3. Saxony topped Leopold (19-15, 19-15) to also finish 3-3. The Cardinals drew the second seed following their one-point advantage over the Crusaders in head-to-head.

Cumulatively, Allie Sprink recorded nine kills to lead Saxony. Lexi Barnes accumulated 18 digs and four kills while Laurel Mueller contributed five kills and eight digs for the Crusaders. Ashley Fritsche and Macy Morehead had five kills apiece and Rachel Wichern notched six digs for Saxony.

Tournament play resumes Thursday at 5 p.m. with top-seeded Advance (2-0-1) taking on eighth-seeded Zalma (0-1-2). Fourth-seeded Leopold (0-2-1) will then face fifth-seeded Bell City (1-0-2) at 6 p.m. followed by second-seeded Woodland (0-0-3) battling seventh-seeded Meadow Heights (1-1-1) at 7 p.m. and concluding with third-seeded Saxony (1-1-1) facing sixth-seeded Oak Ridge (0-0-3) at 8 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 13, Chaffee 4

Hailey Noon hit a triple and drove in five runs to lead the Hawks in their season-opening conference victory over the host Red Devils.

Alyssa Tidwell went the distance in the circle to clinch the win for Kelly (1-0, 1-0 Scott-Mississippi Conference). She gave up three earned runs, walked one batter and had no strikeouts.

Jaci Crank added two doubles and two RBIs for the Hawks.

Kylie Wilhite sustained the pitching loss for Chaffee (0-1, 0-1). She threw the entire game, allowed eight earned runs and recorded five strikeouts and five walks.

Brandi Huber was marked with the pitching loss for Perryville (2-3, 0-1 JCAA Conference). She threw two innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits. She had three strikeouts and walked two batters.

Sarah Handrahan went the distance in the circle and also doubled at the plate to lead Jefferson (5-0, 1-0). She recorded 10 strikeouts and walked one.

Sophie Bright added a double and two RBIs for the Indians.

Grace Sutton suffered the loss in the circle for East Prairie (0-1). She pitched a complete game and allowed eight earned runs. She tallied six strikeouts and one walk.

Chanie Moreland produced the lone hit for the Eagles.

The Royals mounted a seventh-inning comeback and held the Crusaders at bay to get their first win of the season on the road.

Taylor Dugger pitched a complete game to get the win for Twin Rivers (1-0). She allowed one earned run, struck out five and walked four.

Madison Lampe tripled and Bella Galloway batted in three runs for the Royals.

Zoie Roth suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched six innings and gave up 12 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits with one strikeout and 11 walked batters.

Cassidee Wunderlich hit a double and drove in two runs to pace Saxony Lutheran (1-4).

Bobby Wright blasted a home run as the two-time defending Class 1 state spring season champions continued their winning ways and got their fall season off to a good start in the five-inning victory over the visiting Indians.

Wright threw three innings to get the win on the mound for Bell City (1-0). He allowed one earned run and recorded six strikeouts and three walks. Taylor Ogden got the save for the Cubs.

Kasen Barnfield was dealt the pitching loss for Puxico (0-1).

David Banales netted the game-winning goal with 1:27 left on the clock in double overtime as the Raiders dealt the loss to the Crusaders in the opening round of the 10th Annual Festus Classic.

Goalkeeper Jacob Stueve had six saves for Saxony Lutheran (0-2).

The Crusaders resume tournament play today against host Festus.
