Penzel Construction Co., of Jackson is the low bidder for construction of a seismically designed, Highway 25 traffic bridge across the Diversion Channel, between Dutchtown and Blomeyer; Penzel's bid was $3.6 million.

Labor Day. Large crowds find their way to the annual Knights of Columbus Labor Day picnic, which has been a tradition here for more than 25 years; the two-day event is held at the Knights' grounds at 318-20 S. Spanish St.

ST. LOUIS -- Barry Hazen of Cape Girardeau defended his title in the Class A bare bow class of the Missouri State Bow Hunters state archery meet at the Sherwood Archers Club over the weekend; it was the fifth straight year Hazen has been champ; Joyce King, also of Cape Girardeau was second in the Class A women's division.

1941

Southeast Missouri's public schools, most of which are now in session for the fall term, are faced with a shortage of teachers; the placement bureau at the Teachers College here reports receiving many calls for teachers it has thus far been unable to fill; the present military and defense situation is blamed for the shortage.

Meeting at a special session, the Cape Girardeau City Council discusses a number of projects to be taken up in the immediate future, among them the placing of warning signal lights at certain streets intersecting with Independence Street where numerous accidents have occurred.

1916

The Cape Girardeau Public Schools record an increase of 139 pupils over the first day of classes last year; the only schools to show a decrease in the number of pupils are Lincoln, with a loss of 17 over last year, and Washington, with four less.

A half dozen of the Cape Girardeau baseball players were robbed of money and valuables at Chaffee, Missouri, Monday, while taking part in the Labor Day ball game against the railroaders; Albert Grimes was the heaviest loser, $16.85 being taken from him; Elam Vangilder lost $9.45; Homer Smetzer was relieved of a fine ring; Albert Rieck missed $2 and a ring, and Si Wilson of Illmo, who played with the Capahas, was stung for 80 cents.
