Relevant speech from 1950

Margaret Chase Smith, a freshman Senator stood to address the U.S. Senate on June 1, known as the "Declaration of Conscience" speech: "I speak as a Republican. I speak as a woman. I speak as a United States Senator. I speak as an American. ... The nation sorely needs a Republican victory. But I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horseman of Calumny -- Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear." This address was given in 1950 and the subject of her ire was not Donald Trump, but Joseph McCarthy! Thirty-two years of service and this address made her one of the most respected Senators in U.S. history.
