Harvey Fred “Uncle Bud” Nischwitz, 92, of Gordonville passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 28, 1924, in Gordonville, son of Fred and Ida Gluckshertz Nischwitz. He and Ruth Sander were married Feb. 18, 1947.

Harvey attended grade school in Gordonville and graduated from College High School in Cape Girardeau in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 until 1946 in the occupation of Japan.

He farmed with his father and in 1958 began selling Grade A milk. He joined the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and had the top dairy herd in Southeast Missouri in 1977. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Program and was recognized for having the outstanding pasture in 1966. He participated in MIR record keeping for over 25 years and, being an avid dairyman, Harvey was an active member of Mid-America Dairymen Association, serving as treasurer of SEMO Dairymen for 24 years.

He also served on the former Gordonville School Board, was a member of Campster 4-H Club and helped organize the Gordonville 4-H Club, where he was a leader.

After retiring from dairy farming and crop farming, he worked at SEMO Sports and Specialties and at Wal-Mart in Jackson.

Harvey was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville, where he taught Sunday school and served as treasurer and chairman of the congregation.

Loving survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ruth Nischwitz of Gordonville; a son, James (Maria) Nischwitz of Wildwood, Missouri; a daughter, Jean (Jim) Stubbs of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kristen (Colin McMillen) Stubbs, Kaci Stubbs, Emily Nischwitz and Erin Nischwitz; and a sister, Irene Eggiman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Leona Keller and Eleanor Jones.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. today in the fellowship hall of Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gordonville with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville.
