OLD APPLETON, Mo. -- The Old Appleton Bridge Committee will receive a $3,000 grant from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. this month; the funds will go into the general fund to help with the restoration of the bridge, which was destroyed Dec. 3, 1982, when record floodwaters in Apple Creek washed out the 103-year-old span.

Gordonville native Paul Wessel, who helped develop the programming for the Navy's Tomahawk cruise missile, has been named technical director of a new naval research and development command in San Diego.

1966

Laymen's Day is observed at Grace Methodist Church; featured speaker will be J. Clinton Hawkins, lay leader of the Missouri East Conference of the Methodist Church in St. Louis.

The Golden Eagles Marching Band of State College performs at the halftime of the Kansas City Chiefs-Oakland Raiders football game at Kansas City, Missouri; the entire performance is broadcast on some NBC affiliated stations; Cape Girardeans aren't able to see the show, as efforts for the Paducah, Kentucky, outlet of NBC to present the game were unsuccessful.

1941

Hundreds of Southeast Missouri teachers, here for their annual two-day district convention, crowd into the auditorium at the Teachers College for the 66th renewal of the conference; main speaker in the morning is Dr. Clarence A. Dykstra, president of the University of Wisconsin and former head of the national administration of the Selective Service Act.

Under new management, Hillcrest Country Club is to be remodeled, and the golf course is being placed in condition for play the rest of the season; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Keith, who for the past three years, have managed the Cape Girardeau Country Club, took over management at Hillcrest the first of the month.

1916

Republican candidates Dr. John Wesley Hill of New York and Roy F. Britton arrive from St. Louis in the morning; they leave a short time later in automobiles, accompanied by a number of local candidates, for a speaking trip through the county; after speaking at Jackson in the evening, these gentlemen will be rushed to Cape Girardeau for another big Republican rally at the courthouse.

Everything is set for a tremendous gathering of Democrats in Cape Girardeau tomorrow, providing the weather man will clear the skies; Louis B. Houck predicts fully 20,000 visitors will be here; among the notables who will speak at the fairgrounds in the afternoon will be "the Peerless Leader," Col. William Jennings Bryan.
