A Southeast Missourian survey shows local support for Proposition B has edged up during the past two weeks. A poll of 123 people who said they were registered voters showed of those with a definite opinion on Prop B, a statewide tax-and-reform package for education, 65 percent supported the measure.

The Southeast Eldercare Center has received a facelift thanks to new furnishings donated by Hutson Furniture Co. as part of a $25,000 contribution to Southeast Missouri State University's $25 million capital campaign. The store has donated more than $15,000 in sofas, chairs, lamps, tables and chairs to the center at 805 N. Sprigg St.

1966

For the first time in nearly a decade, pledges and contributions to the Cape Girardeau United Fund climbed above the minimum goal. This year, announces chairman Narvol A. Randol, funds totaling $94,000 were contributed by persons and firms in Cape Girardeau. The goal was $92,700.

Cape Girardeau County legislators -- Sen. Albert M. Spradling Jr. of Cape Girardeau and Rep. Marvin E. Proffer of Jackson -- express positive attitudes toward the idea of toll roads to connect Southeast Missouri to the central part of the state. Spradling comments: "Anything to get us there is better than what we've got."

1941

Cape Girardeau coal trucks have beaten such a path to everybody's door, the home folk are about ready for winter. Families started ordering their coal early; now most of the dealers are up to date with residential orders.

The Cape Girardeau County Selective Service Board receives a notice from state headquarters asking all highly trained persons in certain fields to register with the National Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel, composed of scientists and other technically trained persons.

1916

Frank Oliver, father of C.C. Oliver and brother of Sen. R.B. Oliver, is injured seriously in a runaway at Neelys Landing. He will be brought to Saint Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau for treatment. While details are sketchy, it is believed a team hitched to a wagon got away from Oliver's control and ran away, throwing him to the ground and possibly dragging him for some distance.

The Brinkopf Furniture and Undertaking Co. learns in the morning it had more than $200 worth of goods on the steamer Cape Girardeau when it sank Saturday near Chester, Illinois. It is possible the company also had a consignment of goods on the steamer Stacker Lee, which sank that same evening near Memphis, Tennessee.
