American Legion Unit 63 Auxiliary

The Louis K. Juden American Legion Unit 63 Auxiliary met Oct. 12 at Grecian Steak House for lunch, then went to the American Legion Hall for the business meeting. There were 14 members present, including a new member, Bernita Strum.

Linda Kern announced there are four types of scholarships available to junior members.

Vickie Watling reported on S.A.L.T. -- a groundbreaking for the new Cape Girardeau police station.

Monetary gifts approved: $100 for the John J. Pershing Veterans Christmas Shop in Poplar Bluff, Missouri; $500 for gifts for the Missouri Veterans Home Christmas Shop in Cape Girardeau; $600 to purchase eight new tables for the legion hall and $50 to the auxiliary's sponsored Girl Scout troop.

Donated items for Jefferson Elementary School and the Amen Center were collected.

The next meeting was held Nov. 9 with 11 members present. The secretary's minutes and the treasurer's report were read and approved.

Kern gave the education report and instructed members to bring children's winter clothing (gloves, caps, socks, scarves, etc.) for Jefferson Elementary School to the January meeting.

Kern requested $450 to order poppies for next year. The motion was made and approved.

Members agreed to meet 9 a.m. to noon the first and third Fridays in January at the legion hall to finish the quilts that have been started.

A motion was made and approved to send $100 in phone cards to the USO.

The auxiliary was asked to bring new and unwrapped toys to the Missouri Veterans Home Toys for Tots drop-off box.

The emergency relief fund leaflets were distributed.

Kern has raffle tickets for the pot of gold raffle to be held at the next district meeting. Prizes are $250, $100 and $50.

The auxiliary Christmas party will be at noon Dec. 7. This is a members-only party.

The American Legion Christmas party is Dec. 14 and families are welcome.

Town and Country FCE

The Town and Country FCE Club met at the home of Brenda Pender on Nov. 10. The devotion, "Footprints," was read by the hostess. A game brought by Sue Jones, "Spot the Differences," was played. Lois Seabaugh won the game prize.

Roll call was given by Sue Jones, secretary. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes were approved with one correction. Donna Woolsey, treasurer, gave her report. It was approved as read. Pennies for Friendship were collected.

Mary Klaproth, president, opened the meeting with old business followed by new business.

A report was given on the fall district meeting held Oct. 18 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Members attending the meeting were Alene Hamilton, Darlene McCain, Karen Murphy and Woolsey.

Linda Thompson reported to the president on the weighted blanket sewing day Oct. 28 at University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. The group made 16 weighted blankets and delivered them to the Easter Seals Center in Cape Girardeau.

Jones reported that she will mail the Christmas cards to Military Mail next week.

Dean and Sue Jones will erect the Christmas display in Jackson City Park by Nov. 29. The display was to be erected in Cape County Park North on Saturday, Nov. 19.

The club is in charge of arrangements for the December council meeting at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson on Dec. 1. Members signed up to bring various items of food for morning refreshments, along with table decorations. Beverly Nelson will cater the noon meal. Members will meet to decorate the room on the lower level of the Extension Center at 9 a.m. Nov. 30.

Mary Gosche will retire from her position at the University of Missouri Extension Center at the end of December. Her retirement party will be held at the Extension Center, upper level, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 9. All extension club members are invited.

Plans for the annual Christmas party were made. The party will be at the home of Sue Jones at 6 p.m. Dec. 8. A catered meal will be served with the committee of Jones, Thompson and Joyce King in charge. Members are to reveal their secret pals and bring their secret pal a gift.

Toys for the Jackson police toy box collection were brought to the meeting by members.

The program on reverse mortgages was given by Woolsey. Hearth Fire No. 11," Someone in the USA is asking ... Showing Respect for the Flag," was read by members.

Club officers will be installed by Woolsey at the December meeting.

The meeting was adjourned by the president and refreshments were served by the hostess.
