I would hope while they are so giddy about their success they do not forget the principles this nation was founded on — as a nation of immigrants, and as a beacon of hope for the world. Since it was given to us by France, the Statue of Liberty has been a symbol of our country, a gateway to a new life. I would hate to think the words on that statue might change from: “Give us your poor, your tired masses yearning to breathe free,” to something like: “You are welcome, if you are the right race, the right religion or from the right country.”

The President-elect and his followers believe they have a chance to make some changes — to make those who felt forgotten feel a part of the process. Here’s hoping he and they will remember you do not unify the country by pandering only to your constituency, or creating a new class who feel forgotten.
