A request by the city council for proposals for use of Cape Girardeau's tourism funds has procured 28 separate suggestions for consideration; the council in October voted to solicit proposals for use of motel and restaurant tax revenue that total about $600,000.

The Cape Girardeau City Council nixes a plan to charge $5 for collection of discarded Christmas trees; the council votes to provide the service free, provided residents call in tree-collection requests.

The construction of a new runway at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport and related work, for which voters here authorized bonds nearly a year ago, would be virtually ready for a bid call except for a condemnation suit pending in Scott County; the city, unable to negotiate the purchase of land needed for the runway and approach zones, filed the condemnation suit in Scott County Circuit Court against owners of five parcels.

Supermarkets and restaurants in Cape Girardeau generally notice no difference in the sale and consumption of fish today -- the first day Roman Catholics throughout the country begin the meat-on-Friday era.

1941

Given until 9 a.m. today to accept the offer, the Cape Girardeau City Council last night declined to purchase the Mississippi River traffic bridge here at a price of $2.5 million; the price had been set by Frank D. Stranahan, head of the company that owns the bridge.

A towboat that has been built by the Cape Girardeau Sand Co. is virtually finished and will be launched in the river, probably Wednesday, near the company plant at 400 N. Main St.; the tow is diesel powered and was designed to handle the sand barges of the company on the river; Linder Deimund, head of the company, will be in charge of launching the boat.

1916

During a rousing meeting of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club last night, M.E. Leming was elected president of the club for the coming year; Leming was president of the club several years ago, when some very big things were accomplished for the city.

Mayor F.A. Kage has been busy with one of his personal associates for several days rebuilding the fire department house for the new, heavy equipment he forced his servants on the council to buy; the whole building has been upset, a large addition is to be built, and a councilman says he wouldn't be surprised if this cost didn't run between $1,000 and $2,000.
