The search for a new superintendent for the Cape Girardeau School District is underway, and its staff and the community now have the opportunity to participate in it.

Jerry Waddle, a search consultant for the Missouri School Boards' Association, was hired to facilitate the search after Jim Welker announced his retirement effective June 30, 2017.

As a part of his process, he will hold two public forums Dec. 15. The first forum, for district staff, will begin at 4 p.m. in the middle-school cafeteria. The public forum will follow at 6 p.m.

Each meeting is expected to take one hour. Waddle will explain the search process and give participants an opportunity to voice ideas or concerns about employment of a new superintendent.

An online survey will be available for several days after the meeting for staff and community to provide more input for the board of education.

The information gathered will help guide the search, Waddle said at a special session of the Cape Girardeau School Board in November,

Next on the tentative schedule is to have all surveys completed by Dec. 23.
