For the third Cape Girardeau City Council election in eight years, the eligibility of a candidate has come into question; but this time a candidate will be excluded from the race; city officials have determined council candidate Jess Hopple isn't eligible to run for one of three council terms because he hasn't been a Cape Girardeau resident long enough to satisfy the city charter's requirements.

The senior member of the Jackson School Board, John Lorberg, said he won't seek re-election when his term expires next April.

1966

The Cape Choraliers present a pre-Christmas concert in the evening at First Christian Church; the choral group is under the direction of Jack E. Palsgrove; solo parts are sung by Mrs. Emmett Young, soprano, and Paul Hendrix, tenor.

Ann Rafferty was crowned Silver Arrow yearbook queen of Jackson High School and Mike Lincoln was presented as "Big Chief" last night at a program at the grade-school auditorium; a dance followed; the royal couple was chosen by popular vote of the student body.

1941

In sub-freezing weather, patrol duty, to prevent possible sabotage, is extended to the Mississippi River traffic bridge here, as well as the Thebes, Illinois, railroad bridge and to other strategic points in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois; armed men are on duty day and night at major bridges; locally, Commander George Vandeven of the Louis K. Juden Post of the American Legion was asked to furnish names of former servicemen, 14 of whom have been hired, as guards to work in 12-hour shifts.

The management and employees of Carp Inc., 25-27 N. Main St., collect about $200 worth of merchandise made in Japan from the store's various departments and pile it into boxes; the merchandise will be given away or junked.

1916

President Sam Carter of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club sends a telegram to Cong. Joseph J. Russell requesting he arrange for Cape Girardeau to present its claims as the best location for the big armor-plate factory the government is to build.

Harry C. Wasem, the Haarig druggist, is back from Rochester, Minnesota, where he recently underwent an operation at the Mayo hospital; he is feeling better than he has at any time for the past three years.
