Dorris "Red" A. Huey, 88, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Blodgett, Missouri, son of Simon P. and Elsie Jennings Huey. He married his best friend, Mavis Carter, on March 6, 1948, in Chaffee, Missouri. She passed away Feb. 1, 2006.

Red grew up in a farming family and had a paper route in Chaffee, where he was proud of the fact he knew every family in town. He graduated from Chaffee High School, where he excelled in sports -- baseball, football and basketball. Due to his formidable athletic ability, he was known as the "Wild Horse of the Osage."

He spent several years working for Frito-Lay as a district manager and many years in the grocery industry. After retirement, he and Mavis volunteered full time with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. They spent three years in New York City, volunteering in prisons and hospitals with the Inner City Baptist Association. They also volunteered for 15 years in Cherokee, North Carolina, at the local Indian reservation and with the Navajo Indian Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico.

Additionally, he and Mavis worked with Gideons International.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as an avid sports fan.
