As part of the 35th anniversary celebration of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, a special reunion was held yesterday of everyone who has been confirmed at St. Andrew. The celebration continues at the morning worship services, with the Rev. Francis Roschke, first pastor of St. Andrew, as guest speaker. Charter members of the church are honored.

A 10-mile Super Cities Walk for Multiple Sclerosis kicks off at Capaha Park, with Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes, Smiley the Clown and Jackson Mayor Carlton Meyer leading the way. About 200 people walk and raise around $12,000 locally for the national event.

1967

J. Hugh Logan is Cape Girardeau's new mayor; he is elected unanimously to the office at a re-organizational meeting of the city council preceding the regular business session. A. Robert Pierce Jr. is named chairman pro tem.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Mayor Harlan Maxwell, 62, of Chaffee dies in the afternoon in a Cape Girardeau hospital, days before his term in office would have ended. Maxwell was elected mayor of Chaffee in 1963 and was in his fourth year in office. His name was on the ballot for the election held yesterday, but he had withdrawn from the race.

1942

The Cape Girardeau faithful, taking advantage of clear skies and a balmy spring day, turn out in force for two Easter sunrise services, throng churches later in the morning and in the afternoon sport new frocks and suits in a colorful fashion parade. A crowd of several hundred people attend the community Easter sunrise service at Cape Rock, sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance.

Roy Lee Row, 41, was found crumpled at the bottom of the elevator shaft pit at the Gamble Store, 119 N. Main St., where he was employed, late yesterday afternoon and died at 9:30 that night at a local hospital. It is believed Row fell down the shaft from one of the upper floors of the building; he had been employed at the store only a week as maintenance man.

1917

A meeting of representatives of towns in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas, held here yesterday, resulted in dates being assigned for the various fairs for the district; the schedule begins at Cape Girardeau, with the fair set for Sept. 11 to 15. Rodney G. Whitelaw represented Cape Girardeau at the meeting.

J.A. Rigdon reports the first car load of machinery has arrived for his new steam laundry. A month ago he expected his new building on Sprigg Street to be nearly completed by April 1 and ordered all the machinery shipped on that date; the bad weather of late has interfered with work, and it will be several weeks before the machinery can be installed.
