Steve J. Niemann, 93, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Chateau Girardeau Health Care in Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 25, 1924, in Quincy, Illinois, to Anthony Steve and Jessie Bosse Niemann. He and Alice Leverton were married Jan. 1, 1944, in Gulfport, Mississippi. They had been married 41 years when Alice passed away May 11, 1985. He and Mary Sue Ritter Hampton were married June 28, 1991, in Sacramento, California. She survives.

Steve was a 1943 graduate of Quincy High School. On June 29, 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked as an airplane and engine mechanic and was honorably discharged Feb. 13, 1946.

Steve returned to the Quincy area after his military discharge. His main career was in retail grocery stores, and he owned restaurants.

Steve was a 65-year member of Salem United Church of Christ in Quincy. He served on numerous boards and was an official for AAA Tri-State Area swimming.

As a hobby, he designed and built homes.

Loving survivors include his wife of 26 years, Mary Sue of Cape Girardeau; two children, Ron (Sally) Niemann of Blanchardville, Wisconsin, and Jan (Bob) Weiss of Carbondale, Illinois; three stepsons, Tod (Susie) Hampton of Jackson, Brad Hampton of Springfield, Illinois, and Tim Hampton of Wichita, Kansas; a brother, Dale Niemann of Clearwater, Florida; four grandchildren, Tony (Maggie) Niemann, Cheri (Rod) Ahlrichs, Heather (Mark) Shipley and Meghan (Damien) Hagedorn; two step-grandchildren, Bailey Hampton and Carly Hampton; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice; a brother, Don Niemann; two sisters, Bette Jackson and Berniece Greene; and his parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with full military honors.
