The Rev. Marvin Eugene "Gene" Vickrey, 87, formerly of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Cypress, Texas. Rev. Marvin 'Gene' Vickrey

The Rev. Marvin Eugene "Gene" Vickrey, 87, formerly of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Cypress, Texas.

He was born Oct. 5, 1929, in Hannibal, Missouri, to John and Helen Vickrey.

Gene was a graduate of Jackson High School. His other education included Southwest Baptist College, William Jewell College and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He and Alberta Carver were married May 11, 1951, and three children were born to their union. They had been married 62 years when Alberta passed away Sept. 7, 2013.

Gene began his ministry in 1953, accepting the call to serve as pastor of Burfordville Baptist Church. Thereafter, his ministry took him to the states of Kansas and Texas. He retired from South Main Baptist Church in Houston, but continued to provide love and support to Houston families by celebrating the lives of their loved ones at funeral and memorial gatherings.

Loving survivors include two children, Gina (the Rev. Jack) Mann Jr. of Cypress and John Vickrey of The Woodlands, Texas; two siblings, Nancy (Jim) Kinder of Baldwin, Missouri, and Charles (the late Phyllis) Vickrey of Jackson; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Marvin Eugene Vickrey; and his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the John Vickrey Fund at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main St., Houston, TX, 77002.
