1993

The proposed $25 million school bond issue drew much of the attention at last night's forum for Cape Girardeau Board of Education candidates; about 60 people attended the forum at Central Junior High School, sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department employees are building backrests for the bleachers at Capaha Park; the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club originally built the bleachers and have donated the funds for the lumber for the backrests.

1968

The first phase of construction on the Cape Rock Drive-Kingshighway intersection has been placed underway; a new driveway into Wimpy's restaurant is being built; bid letting for the main work is scheduled at the next meeting of the State Highway Commission.

An incumbent and three newcomers to local politics are chosen at the city primary election to form the slate of city council candidates for the April 2 general election; they are J. Ronald Fischer, who is seeking re-election, Ivan L. Irvin, Warren S. Hastings and Charles A. Juden Jr.

1943

Coming in a series of downpours, 4.21 inches of rain fell on Cape Girardeau late last night and early today, causing heavy damage; severe lightning accompanied the spring storm, disrupting the telephone and electric power distribution systems; as usual, West Broadway floods east of Clark Avenue.

A small, special allotment of 8,000 pounds of beef, or about 20 head of beeves, for slaughter has been given to the Central Packing Co.; the cattle probably will be butchered tomorrow, but all of the beef already has been placed with hospitals and similar customers, and the firm won't be able to sell any additional from the special government allowance.

1918

For the second time in the past seven weeks, the gentlemen's furnishing store of Garrett Glen, 419 Broadway, caught fire last night, but was saved from destruction by residents who discovered the blaze and extinguished it before any damage was done; doing the firefighters' jobs for them were Al Brinkopf, Henry Kimmich, Walter Meystedt and Henry Brunke, who spotted the flames as they passed the store on their way to the bowling alley.

In the first primary election held under the commission form of government, H.H. Haas and Rush H. Limbaugh are nominated for mayor, Haas receiving nearly twice as many votes as Limbaugh; four men are nominated for the commissioners' race: Louis Wittmor, Richard Frissell, E.P. Ellis and August H. Ruesskamp.
