Acting, he says, "for the best interests of the school," Kenneth Knox, head football coach at State College for 16 years, a former Indian athlete and a 1948 graduate, announces his retirement as coach; he will, however, continue as athletic director and head of the Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the college; the Board of Regents immediately elevates Thomas W. Thrower, defensive backfield coach the past three years, to the head coaching position.

Crites and Sailer, a Cape Girardeau construction company, is the apparent low bidder for general work on an addition to Parker Hall, women's physical education building at State College.

The Cape Girardeau Teachers College has been approved for Army and Navy specialized war training courses, bringing the prediction that between 400 and 500 members of the armed forces will be assigned to the school; while approved for either Army or Navy, it is assumed that the Navy will take over the program here.

A large crowd, estimated at between 3,000 and 4,000 men, turned out yesterday at Fairground Park to see a practice game given by the St. Louis Browns; Mayor Raymond E. Beckman and other baseball enthusiasts are hoping the Browns will play an exhibition game here next Sunday, the last Sabbath before the team winds up its spring training program.

The Cape Girardeau County Council of Defense appears before the County Court asking that body to cooperate in the employment of a woman demonstrator agent for the county; she would be expected to constantly go over the county giving demonstrations and advice on home economics, food conservation, sanitation and other matters to promote healthy living conditions.

Gordon G. Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Allison, who recently graduated in chemistry from Chicago University, has been called to Washington by the War Department; he will enter a munitions laboratory as a chemist.
