Larry R. Hanning, 78, of Burfordville died Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 13, 1939, in Cape Girardeau to Ruel L. and Martha E. Hitt Hanning. He and Sharon Cobb were married Sept. 10, 1967, at Vandalia, Missouri.

Larry graduated from Jackson High School in 1957. He then served in the Marine Corps three years from 1957 to 1960.

He worked on a towboat three years.

In 1972, Larry graduated from University of Missouri in Columbia with a master of science degree. He was an entomologist for the State of Missouri, Department of Agriculture, Plant Industries Division from 1972 to 2005.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Gideons International. He was active in jail ministry at the Cape Girardeau County Jail and prison ministry at Charleston, Missouri. Larry never forgot the awesomeness of what Jesus did for him at the cross and devoted much time to proclaiming Jesus to the lost wherever he happened to be, even traveling to the Philippines three times, as well as China, Brazil and Mexico. He also traveled to Uganda and Kenya with Hope Seeds.

His hobbies included gardening and witnessing for Jesus.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Hanning of Burfordville, and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, David Hanning.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Jacob May officiating. Burial will be at Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gordonville. Full military rites will be provided by the Missouri Honors Team.

Memorial contributions may be given to Gideons International or Hope Seeds.
