The U.S. Senate has confirmed former Cape Girardeau County sheriff John Jordan as federal marshal for the eastern district of Missouri.

U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., praised Jordan after the Senate action Tuesday.

Blunt said in a news release "John Jordan's decades-long career in law enforcement has helped make our communities safer and stronger."

Jordan has "earned widespread praise from members of the community, law enforcement leaders, and public officials. He will be a great asset to the U.S. Marshals Service, and I wish him the best in his new role," Blunt said.

President Donald Trump nominated Jordan for the federal marshal post earlier this year.

Jordan resigned as sheriff Aug. 13 after more than 23 years of service, making him the longest serving sheriff in Cape Girardeau County history.

He joined the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department in 1986 and served as deputy investigator, sergeant and lieutenant before being elected sheriff in 1994.

In his resignation letter, Jordan said he has had "a blessed career."
